Mind-controlled car

This is some interesting news…

Emotiv’s mind-reading EPOC headset may not have changed the face of video games, but it looks like it’s proven to be more than adequate for a team of German researchers, who’ve used it as the key component in their BrainDriver project. Yes, that’s a mind-controlled car and, after a bit of training, is does appear to have performed reasonably well — albeit with a slight delay that makes any real world test a worse idea than it already was. Interestingly, this latest effort actually follows some previous attempts at a completely autonomous car by the same group of researchers at the Freie Universität Berlin, and they say that the two could eventually be combined at some point in the distant future — for instance, in a taxi that’s able to drive itself but also responds to the thoughts of its passengers. Head on past the break for the video.

What cars should they bring back?

Posted by: n wright 275  /  Category: General

What cars are out of production now that you wish they would bring back into production?

I’ll start off with a couple:

Chevy Tahoe 2-Door

Its like a suburban without the second row, My papa owned one (when they used to call it a ‘blazer,’ still based on the Silverado/Suburban platform though). I wouldn’t mind owning one. Its less of a soccer mom SUV, I wish the class of two door body on frame SUV’s didn’t go out of style.

Lincoln Continental

Lincoln: We need a proper continental, not whatever you gave us in the 90′s.

My grandmother owned one, probably the best car she owned. Its just a badass car all the way around, and it must have the suicide doors.

I’ll probably think of a few others

New Car

I realised it really has been ages since I’ve been here…I finally got my 1 series in December, and she’s gorgeous!
In the end I got a four year old 118d manual in black, which is a pretty sensible colour I guess.

I’m not gonna lie, it took a while to get used to the whole diesel thing and for a bit I was all over the shop, aha, but now it’s good! I love the fact I have power and can overtake people, rather than always getting overtaken haha! Also, it’s such a good cruiser, stick it in 6th and off you go! It also does like 42.5 mpg on a long trip which is really good.

So this is Roxy, note the plate..had to be done :)

Test Drives

Posted by: VTEC_Dreams  /  Category: General

This thread will be for test drives you ladies and gents conduct. When you drive something you’ve never driven, you should come to this thread and lay it down. Let us know what you thought.

I’d hope we could come to use this thread as a resource for others, and I’ll just keep it here and open for all.

——-

I’ll start!

So, recently I bought a 2007 TL.

That was the end of the journey, but I did drive a whole pile of other cars whilst looking for that TL.

I’m going to preface by saying that I realize I’m pretty biased, but I try not to let that get in the way of my overall opinions, and just to solidify my tastes and reassure myself that I’m not just drunk on brand H for no good reason, I went and drove a few products from a few other makers whilst I was looking for the car that I finally did pick out. It was enlightening and in fact, reassuring.

There were three things that I had decided on before I even test drove anything. Maximum price of 20~ grand, fairly low mileage (read: newer) has to be good on the highway, has to be good to drive overall, not a Toyota, not a Nissan, not an SUV. I mean, my wife and I also had to think it was an okay looking car…something we’d like to look at in the driveway. That was it, really. That was my list of must-haves. I honest to goodness don’t give a crap about features and options and gewgaws…proof being that my DD is a Honda Fit and my weekend car is a bare bones 1990 Miata, both of which I adore and would gladly replace with exact copies should anything happen to either. Also the car had to obviously run well and be clean and straight. I am picky with used cars, so I’d turn a car down for little stuff. *Especially* for 20 grand (read: a fairly good chunk of change for a car, IMO)

So, first I decided to go outside of brand H to see what was going on elsewhere in the automotive world. Over a month and a half of Mondays off I lined up test drives of a previous gen Mazda 6 V6, a newer Ford Fusion V6, a previous gen Subaru Legacy 2.5GT, and one of the new ugly-ass Subarus with the H6. I decided on cars with V6′s because I already had a 4 cylinder Accord at the time, and decided a V6 would be better for highway slogs. Also, a manual is out because I already own two cars with sticks, and the wife would be driving this car. She can drive a standard as well as anyone I’ve ever been in a car with, but she gets tired of it. I understand that. Plus, on the highway the auto is nice to have.

I admit, the price advantage and low miles of these cars were initially extremely tempting, and I almost decided to rule out the Hondas and Acuras because they’re so damn expensive second hand.

So, away I went!! A child in a candy store! A meth head in Atlanta! A homosexual in San Francisco! Evo_Power drinking a beer! Fun times!

Amirite?!

Sort of…

The Mazda was out almost right away. I feel like the V6 powered car is the bad car of the bunch of 6′s, because it drove really well other than the fact that it felt like it had a giant anchor in the front of the car, and the fact that it has a SUPER jumpy throttle. Plus, it really wasn’t very strong or nice sounding or refined. Just not good, period. I feel like the four banger would have been and probably is a far better match for the chassis. Mazda’s fours are sort of shitty as far as power delivery (and reliability LOL) goes, but they are fairly entertaining sounding and they do rev quickly and freely. So, engine aside, I could tell there was a good chassis under there, and the steering and brake feel is great in that car. Good seats as well. Interestingly, it reminded me of most of the Mazda’s I’ve driven. Great in that it felt "sporty" and frisky and ready to roll, but bad in that it felt sloppily engineered and sort of half-assed in a lot of ways. Also, it just felt cheap and sort of clattery overall. If you want a 6, buy one with a four banger. That’s probably a pretty good car. The V6, not so much.

Unfortunately for the Ford, it is a fairly similar story. Not surprising considering they’re the same car–which I knew going in, but I wanted to see how different they are. The Fusion’s engine is faaaaaaar nicer (I think it was the new 3.5…good engine!), it’s quieter overall, it feels far better screwed together, and it’s interior is genuinely nice. I have to say I was thoroughly impressed when I was just sitting in it and looking at everything. Buuuuut after I started driving it I realized it’s steering sucks *and* blows, it still has the same lump-hanging-over-the-front feeling as the Mazda, and unfortunately, it’s just not as good to drive as the Mazda. The chassis is bland, if I’m going to be honest. I really, really, REALLY hated to say it, but it seemed like a great engine strapped to a not-so-great chassis. Like a lot of American cars. :| Poo.

Really, If Mazda and Ford would put their heads together and gave the cars a combination of their strong points it would make for one very good car, but as is it’s two cars with compromises.

On to…

The Subaru’s. OH, the Subaru’s. So, as far as Legacy’s (Legacies??) go–They have absofreakinglutely brilliant chassis’ and AWD systems, the new one especially is solid as a brick shithouse, they are clean looking and classy inside, and they do have nice seats and little features that a lot of cars in the price range don’t have. They also have HORRIBLE engines and transmissions. Honest to goodness I would be a total Subaru owner if they didn’t have such piss-poor engines and lousy transmissions. Bad sounds, clunky shifts, lousy powerbands, and crazy turbo lag on the 2.5GT that I never, ever remembered on older cars. The new Legacy is really ugly outside, too. I wanted to give it a chance because I found one that was really reasonably priced, but I couldn’t do it. Just too much to look at. And really, they both had wierd steering. Not bad, just strange. Off center they’re light, on center they’re heavy. Opposite of what I’m used to, for sure.

In case you’re wondering–

Yes, I should have totally driven a Lexus IS350, and now I’m wishing I would have. No, I don’t like the way the new Mazda 6 looks. Yes, I refuse to drive a Hyundai. Yes, I hate GM with a passion, And finally, no, I didn’t go near a BMW/Merc/Audi/VW due to high maintenance costs plus my general fear/ignorance/loathing of German cars. The "Gurmans" I did find were sort of high mileage and were sketchy looking. And really, I’ve driven a few BMWs and MB’s through the years and I don’t understand why folks love them so much, to be honest. They all feel porky and overweight to me.

Anyways,

I was genuinely disappointed because I wanted so badly to be proven that I am just a dumb fanboy for no good reason, but it just didn’t happen, guys! It didn’t! Those cars didn’t make me happy! I wouldn’t have spent my money on them!

I did the same damn thing when I was looking for the Fit, too, and likewise I wondered what was wrong with me, or rather, what was wrong with the industry.

So, I, happily as a Honda enthusiast and grudgingly as a car enthusiast, went off to drive a pile of Hondas and Acuras.

Anyone want to hear how that went or will you all just accuse me of fawning and just roll your eyes at me?

World’s Best Job: a BMW, Condo and $65K for Social Media Gig at BMW Dealer

Posted by: St00k  /  Category: General

Quote:

A Canadian BMW dealership is offering what might very well be the world’s best job – especially if you’re a fan of BMWs. Endras BMW, located just outside Toronto, Canada is now accepting applications for a year-long social media position. The title: Ultimate Blogger.

To become the Ultimate Blogger, Endras is looking for a serious BMW nut. What the lucky individual will land is a $65,000 year-long contract, a one-year lease of a BMW and a condo in downtown Toronto, plus travel to international destinations. (In the past Endras has taken clients to the Nurburgring!)

As the Ultimate Blogger, this winning candidate will cover BMW news for the dealership, run the Facebook page, Twitter account and more.

There is, however, a catch. Considering the tremendous number of BMW fans that are certain to apply, getting the job won’t be easy and applicants will have to prove their worth using their social media skills. Entrants will be required to submit a 200 word statement proving just how ‘connected’ they are. The top 20 chosen will then have just 48 hours to shoot and produce a video highlighting their ‘obsession with performance.’ The top 10 videos with the most votes will then move on to the final interview stage.

And yes, Endras BMW is accepting applications internationally.

Summernats 24 – Pics – 56K need not apply

Posted by: lambo or holden  /  Category: General

Its taken me a while to get around to posting these photos. For those who don’t know Summernats is a big car fesitival (biggest in Australia I belive) held every year in Canberra. The focus is mostly on Australian and American cars with big V8s. Think drag racers, burn outs and dyno comps. (No Drag racing at the event though) There is a road ringing the even for owner to cruise around in their cars showing off. Of course everyone followed the rules and didn’t do any burnouts there *wink*.

No Longer in the Elite Hall, Just looking around

This is one of my all time favourite cars. Saw it in Street Machines a few years back and loved it. Probably the highligh of the show was stumbling over this. It was made by an old Australian hot rodding legend who owns the Castlemain Hot Rod shop. I can’t remember his name right now, any help Wes?

The following car was the winner of the Burnout comp
