Muscle Cars in America

A “muscle car” is a term referring to the high performance variety of automobiles. This term usually refers to Australian, South African and American automobile models. It is generally a 2-door mid-sized vehicle with a rear wheel drive. It also has a powerfully large V8 engine and sold at a very low price.

The very first one that came out was produced between 1960s and 1970s. In most cases, the two main purposes of muscle cars are for racing and street use. They are different from GTs and sports cars. These have two seats or 2+2, intended for touring and road racing. These are different from the muscles cars because of the small size, special nature and high cost. There are varied opinions as to whether compacts, high-performance cars as well as pony cars qualify as classic muscle cars.

The country of origin and age of a car determines if it is a classic muscle car or not. The use of the term “muscle car” occurred only after the end of the vehicle’s production. During the time when the production of muscle cars is still at its peak, the American media regard them as “super cars.”

History of American Muscle Cars

Some say that the Oldsmobile Rocket 88 from 1949 was the very first breed of muscle car. It aroused the public interest for its power and speed. It featured a powerful and innovative engine, consequentially America’s very first high-compression overhead valve or V8. This engine is present in the earlier Oldsmobile body. A magazine for muscle cars said that putting a V8 engine in the hood of a typical car and running faster like a sports car belongs to the Oldsmobile.

Some manufacturers showcased a performance of limited edition and flashy models. Chrysler is among the first ones that led such vehicles to become popular. An inspired mixture of Hemi luxury car trappings and power found in Chrysler’s 1955 C-300 became the newest attraction of NASCAR. This particular model became “America’s Most Powerful Vehicle” due to its 224 kW or 300 horsepower.

The model is also one of the best selling cars of its century. The C-300 has the ability to accelerate from 0 up to 60 miles per hour or 97 kilometers per hour within 9.8 seconds. The car can reach up to 120 miles per hour or 200 kilometers per hour. After two years, another fast car became available in the market. This honor belongs to the Rambler Rebel. As said by Motor Trend, Rambler Rebel is the fastest American sedan.

Muscle cars gained popularity in the 1960s. It happened when major companies such as Plymouth, Chrysler, Ford and Dodge battled in drag racing. The Dodge 1962 Dart Max Wedge, for instance, can run a quarter of a mile drag strip with just 13 seconds. This 1962 Dart Max Wedge can run more than 110 miles per hour or 170 kilometers per hour.

Muscle car productions from other manufacturers such as Pontiac, Chevrolet and Oldsmobile occurred in 1964. Between the years 1964 and 1965, Mopar introduced its 7-liter or 426 cubic inches V8 engine, special trim and sift linkage with shifted transmission. Ford released its Thunderbolts model in the same year.

We still see these vehicles today but the owners seldom use them. They have a second car which they use to go to work everyday. Meanwhile, the muscle car is stored in a safe place in their garage, kept as a collection.

Top 10 Tips for Classic Car Restoration

Posted by: Brad Lithium  /  Category: Technology

Classic car restoration is one of the most rewarding activities a car enthusiast can perform. Transforming a “seemingly old car” back into a classic vehicle in all of its glory is nothing less than art.

While this is a very exciting activity a car owner must know how to properly evaluate the condition of a car and then establish the level of restoration to be performed to such vehicle. There are 4 levels of classic car restoration, each one should be applied individually depending on the kind of project, budget and purpose. These are the top 10 tips for those classic car aficionados who want to reverse the effects of ‘the sands of time’ on their vehicles:

1. Sit down, grab a piece of paper, a parts catalog which would be relevant to the model you want to restore and run some numbers within your budget. Never deviate from it, otherwise the results will be obvious.

2. Inspect your car very carefully, top to bottom, inside and out; use strong flashlights to inspect the trunk, the engine area, etc. This will help you see the kind of repairs needed to be done to this vehicle. If possible take it to a car shop where it could be lifted to take a good look at the condition from beneath. Here you will determine if a the restoration process is worth the time and money.

3. After inspecting the vehicle, it is also important to decide whether you have a ‘solid’ car which can be restored without replacing the entire frame, floor, axles, etc. It would amaze you how this step can save you major dollars (Euros, Yens, etc.). By ‘solid car’ we are inferring that the car structure should be strong, as well as the floor; a little rust can be repaired but a completely rusty car which has the entire frame compromised will eventually crumble.

4. Decide whether you want to work with a “friend who knows how to repair cars” or a professional. It is often recommended not to involve friends and family on such projects as the time and money invested on this process may cause some trouble if the right procedures are not followed. Cars restored by people other than professionals tend to run well for a couple of years and in some cases start to breakdown thereafter.

5. Have a car restoration professional run some numbers and make sure they match or are close to the numbers you ran on step 1.
6. Decide the level of car restoration:

* Driver restoration: is often performed to get a car back to a fully functional and operational condition, they often include part replacement and minor cosmetic adjustments.

* Street Show: this restoration level involves getting a car into a fully working condition and repairing all major cosmetic problems (body work is required). If judged by a professional it should fall within the 80-89 point range.

* Show Car: restoring a classic car back to this form often requires professional work, if judged by a professional, there restorations and labor quality will fall within the 90-95 point range.

* Concours: this is the highest level of car restoration possible. All the work should be done by professionals, from part replacement to body work. These type of cars are intended for auto shows or private collections and not to be driven. Obviously, the original car to be repaired must be in quite optimal condition to achieve this stage, otherwise a major investment is necessary.

7. Start the restoration process, if possible follow a 2 step procedure (part replacement and chassis adjustments). Visit the car shop as often as possible to make sure the right work is being done. If this is not possible then have your mechanic send you periodical picture updates through email.

8. After the part replacement process is done, visit the shop again to re-inspect the chassis repairs needed, if sheet metal patches are necessary then remember to document the places where they are to be applied.

9. When all major restorations are done run a close and detailed inspection just like it was done during the second step to make sure everything is OK. Take it for a ride and see if it works correctly.

10. Remember to give proper maintenance to your newly restored classic using all the recommended parts and products.

The trick to getting newly restored cars to last for a long time lies within the last step, if the vehicle is properly maintained, in time, it will become a valuable asset and a sure head turner.

Used Car Auctions

Anyone who needs a vehicle urgently but has a shoestring budget can always check out the cheap used car auctions. Such auctions take place all the time and at any point of time, they are held in different states in the US. A quick visit or call to the local government agencies and auctioneers can get you the information you need. On top of that, you do need some useful tips on how to make the most out of the auto auctions.

Now, these cheap used car auctions have been the favorite hunting grounds of hordes of used vehicle dealers. In fact, you can find many second hand vehicles and not only those which have 2 or 3 previous owners. You would be amazed that the condition of these vehicles are quite good and are still in brilliant working condition.

So since you are reading this, you must be keen on buying an automobile from the cheap used car auctions. Here are some great tips for you to mince on for the best deals. These auctions exist because there are many vehicles that are repossessed or seized by the government or banks due to reasons like loan or tax failure to pay, criminal offenses and so on.

Hence, since they are not willingly sold but seized by force, you would realize that the owners do maintain them properly. Not only so, you can often find branded top of the range kind of cars like Mercedes, BMW, Porsche and so on. Obviously, some of these owners must be living an opulent life prior to the seizure. The vehicles are often sold at ridiculously low prices, sometimes as low as $100 or up to 90% off their retail prices.

One tip you need to pick up before you go off bidding at cheap used car auctions is to work out your finances and check your bank balances first. Buying decision has to be made on the spot and you need to know what the maximum amount of money you can spare is. Also be sure to include whatever associated expenses. There are other bidders who may compete with you so be sure to know your limit. Do not let your heart rule over your head no matter how much you like the car. There would always be another that you fancy.
Be sure to turn up earlier than the operation hours of the auction. You want to be the first in the queue. Since you are early, you get to view and check out each car they offer. Bring along someone who is qualified in such events. Or at least find someone such as an auto mechanic who can help you to assess the condition of the vehicle.

Cheap used car auctions offer the cars in “as is” condition. They are used and therefore may have suffered from some damages and require repairs. Most need only small repairs but there are some which have been involved in serious accidents. Remember to inspect the car thoroughly. See if the engine is working fine, and also do a check on the VIN# on the different parts of the vehicle to make sure that they all carry the same number and do not belong to other vehicles. If they do not tally, there is a possibility that the vehicle is reassembled or has been involved in some major overhaul.

Once you have made a successful bid, carry out your due diligence and read the contract thoroughly. Read the fine prints and footnotes and make sure that the clauses and terms are favorable to you. With these, you are in a good position to land yourself with a good deal from these cheap used car auctions.

Thousands of classic car enthusiasts gathered at “one of the greatest F1 circuits in the world” yesterday for the Donington Autojumble, in the hope of saving the legendary Donington circuit. This novel idea was thought of by motor enthusiast Lee Coombs as part of a campaign to save Donington. Mr Coombs shows he knows a thing or two about owning an impressive vehicle as he drives around in a 2006 Lotus Elise.

Mr Coombs has commented on the success of the rally by saying “it was an opportunity for people to come to Donington Park for free and show their allegiance, and I think we have proved it with about 5,000 people coming along to the event”.

Attendees also commented on the success of the rally, with Peter Storey of Oxford, who bought along his pride and joy 1962 E-type Jaguar, saying “it has been a great day with so many people turning up. We just wanted to show our support”.

Maintenance Tips for Your Vintage Car

Posted by: Brad Lithium  /  Category: Classics

Vintage cars call for greater effort and time on the part of the owner to guarantee its true value. The long rest period given to these vintage cars that see the world once-in-a-while make it highly prone to all types of wear and tear. From the rusting of metal parts to short circuits in the wiring to locking up of the brakes; the dangers to which it can fall into are enormous. It is, therefore, inevitable for the owner of a vintage car to reduce the scratches or other damages to prevent the chances of depletion of its true worth.

Here are some basic tips that can go a long way in maintaining the performance and appeal of classic cars.

1 Caring under the hood

Overheating of the engine is one major problem faced by owners of vintage cars. As a preliminary measure, make it a point to use proper gasoline without any traces of ethanol while refueling. These cars are designed to run on normal gasoline. The introduction of ethanol will result in corrosion of metals in the engine, causing a greater amount of damage. Also, check the belts and hoses for cracks and make occasional replacements irrespective of the miles driven.

Radiators are another part that is prone to dirt accumulation over time. Through the use of a high pressure nozzle, water can be pumped into it to clean it off any debris and dirt. The proud owner must also take measures to check for deposits on the tank or tubes as it is a sign of leakage that can impair fuel efficiency.

2 Protecting the interior

The old leather seats of classic cars are highly prone to mildew and dust. So, make sure that your seats are securely covered to reduce damage to the interior. If your car is parked in a garage for a long period, make it a point to roll down the windows a small degree to permit air circulation. Many people take advantage of baking soda to absorb moisture during this period.

3 Replacement of parts

Acquiring spare parts and replacements calls for a great amount of time and patience on the part of the owner. Always take measures to replace vintage parts for your particular make, model, and year of the car. This will ensure maximum value to the car.

4 Care while in storage

If the car is kept in storage, pump out and drain the fluids while the engine is hot. Leaving the petcock open and removing the radiator cap will ensure maximum air circulation during the storage period. Then, the battery has to be removed, cleaned with water and baking soda solution, and topped-up with distilled water before placing them in a cool dry place for safe keeping.

Once every single aspect of the vintage car has been gone over in detail, you can cover the car with a cotton flannel cloth as this offer better breathing space for the car. A soft cover is recommended — it makes things easy on your paint and the car through better air circulation.

Vintage cars are a jewel in the crown. A detailed and soft care program for your car and its components will ensure maximum enjoyment to the owner and to the world.

Why the 1965 Buick Riviera is one of the Coolest Classic Cars Ever Made

Posted by: Brad Lithium  /  Category: Classics

The Buick Riviera that was released and sold in the year I was born, 1965, was quite a vehicle. It was the last year for the “first generation” Riviera model – and by far the best. A unique, recognizable body style that encompassed a spacious cabin and housed a powerful V8 engine has now become a sought-after gem of classic car collectors. I was fortunate enough to have one for a few months in my youth. Here are some of its power stats:

*0-60 in 8 seconds *Quarter mile in 16 seconds *Top speed observed 115 MPH *Mileage 13.2 MPG

With a 401 Wildcat under the hood, I had no trouble getting where I wanted to go. And while the body was large, it was quite maneuverable thanks to the standard equipment power steering and stiff heavy-duty suspension. And who says getting there fast can’t be in style? Check out some of the features it came with:

*Front bucket seats *Bucket-style rear seats *Cruise control *Tilt steering wheel *Center console floor-shifter & storage comp. *Power windows, including wing-window! *Driver side 4-way power seat *Air conditioning *AM/FM radio with power antenna

This 1965 car had more stuff than my 1985 Toyota did! I can remember cranking up the radio with the cruise control on doing 75 while adjusting my power seat, the tilt wheel, and the power wing windows. Ah to be young again – those were the days.

But the real feature that made the 1965 Buick Riviera stand out from all the other years were the hidden headlights. Tucked out of sight by the clam-shell covers that opened and closed automatically on the outer edges of the vehicle, they were moved back into the grille for all future body styles (where they had been the previous 2 years.

Back in the mid-80′s these cars were a lot easier to find, but there are some original vehicles still sitting in driveways out there is suburban and rural America. You might be able to pick one up for $1,000 if you do your homework. Less populated areas away from big metro cities are your best bet for discovering one of these hidden gems.

Find one, invest some time and/or money into restoring it, and you will have something special. It’s a good investment too; you just can’t lose restoring classic American cars.

There is another unique Riviera worth mentioning here, and that is the 1972 model, otherwise known as the “torpedo back.” A neighbor-mechanic of mine told me they love those things in Las Vegas (this was in 1985). I have never owned one of those – not yet anyway!

The Benefits of Joining a Classic Car Club

Posted by: Brad Lithium  /  Category: Automotive

We humans are social animals at heart, and even when we have an interest which may be considered relatively solitary, we can make it into something social by forming a club devoted to its celebration. As much as people who love science fiction movies and television shows may be the undeserving **** of cruel jokes, they seem to have a great time at conventions and can form clubs which will astound you with their size, loyalty and frequently their sharp wit. And if you think that sci-fi fans are nerds, you might want to avoid reading what some people say about classic car buffs. It is not always flattering. What it comes down to is a single question – do you care?

Joining a classic car club might be seen as being one step removed from turning up to a sci-fi convention in full fancy dress, but there are countless advantages for a car lover in joining a club, so the social “stigma”, such as it is, can be largely ignored. The fact of the matter is that it allows you to meet people with whom you share an interest – something that might take a very long time if you live and work with car agnostics – as well as people who can help you expand your knowledge on a certain matter. If your classic car needs just that final touch to make it look as good as new, and you have been racking your brains for months trying to work out what it is, the chances are someone at a club will know.

If you are a big fan of classic cars, you may well not yet own one, or want to either grow your collection or trade in the one you have for a model you have been coveting for years. The contacts you make at a classic car club can help you immeasurably in this respect. They may be able to point you towards a dealer who will be particularly interested in your car, or might be able to provide you with the car you’ve been dreaming of owning for so long. Being interested in classic cars may just be the uniting factor that enables you to meet someone who will become a firm friend for the rest of your years.

The benefits of joining a club devoted to the celebration of classic cars will fall mainly into two brackets – those of practical use in terms of the cars, and those of a social nature. In both capacities, you will be unlikely to regret taking the decision to join a club. Quite apart from anything else, the social occasions like car shows that you can experience a whole lot more readily through being in a club will broaden your horizons. Whatever else can be said about classic car clubs, they provide their members with a range of benefits that are more than worth the annual dues, and can enable you to share something important with a wider group of people.

Fast-track Your Marketing Online

What I am beginning to see is a massive push forward in the marketing world towards “future-proofing” brands through online strategies – mainly by increasing SEO (search engine optimisation) and making use of the key online attraction factors of:

1. Community

2. Authority

3. Reciprocity

“Scarcity” is the forth factor, but I won’t discuss that in this post as it doesn’t necessarily apply to everyone.

In the not-so-distant past these factors were difficult to solidify and quantify online (and in fact most people are still unaware of their importance), but fortunately there are now various techniques and technologies that can offer some highly efficient ways to integrate these key factors along with powerful “traffic generation” strategies (increasing website visitors) into a singular system which can be controlled, managed and tested to ensure maximum impact and success.

The main goals and benefits of utilising these technologies and building a stronger sense of Community, Authority and Reciprocity into the online presence of a brand would include (but not limited to)…

1. Increase Brand Awareness (both Locally and Globally)

2. Increase Sales, Sign-Ups and Repeat Customers

3. Save Time by Automating Certain Processes

4. Reduce Budget-Spend and Vastly Increase Readership of Website Content

5. Become Perceived as an Authority in your Niche

6. Increase the Sense of Goodwill through Resource Contributions (by providing accessible, useful, unique and/or high-quality content online)

7. Greatly Reduce the Effort Required to Publish Marketing and Resource Information

8. Increase the Perceived Intrinsic Value of Brand

The C.A.R. strategy certainly warrants further consideration for any business wishing to expand. If you’d like to discuss how this highly successful online marketing “vehicle” can drive your business further, faster — please feel free to contact me to arrange a meeting (or email discussion if you don’t live in Melbourne, Australia).

My final thought…. Fast cars are more fun to drive. And C.A.R.S. drive F.A.S.T. (Financial gain And Seriously big numbers in terms of website Traffic) if they have the right engine and the right driver (and yes, these are definitely topics for further discussion here on my blog in the not-so-distant future)

Happy Driving!

1,000 Bhp Exotic Cars – Three To Choose From

Posted by: Brad Lithium  /  Category: Uncategorized

fast cars
If you love sheer power, and you want a car that produces 1,000 bhp, you now have three to choose from – and that is without going to the tuners like Ruf ofr Callaway, who will get this much power from engines that are currently in the 500- 700 bhp range. The tjree in the 1000 bhp club are the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, the Bristol Fighter T, and the Koenigsegg CCXR. Theoretically, these are all good for 250 mph in theory, but not in practice.

First on the scene was the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, the world’s fastest and most powerful exotic car, with a top speed of 248 mph.

Engineering masterpiece

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is quite an engineering masterpiece, with a W-16 8.0 liter cylinder engine mid-mounted driving through a seven-speed semi-automatic gearbox to all four wheels – four-wheel drive is definitely a good idea with this amount of power. Not only is it immensely fast, but with four-wheel drives it is very stable. It has ceramic brake discs and an air brake to help you slow down from over 125 mph.

A very surprising addition to the 1,000 bhp plus club is the Bristol Fighter T, which has an engine developing 1,012 bhp, just 11 more than the Bugatti! This is a front-engine, rear-drive car designed for high-speed touring.

To be precise, the V-10 engine in the Fighter T whacks out 1,012 bhp at 5,600 rpm. Bristol says that the top speed of the car is around 270 mph, but it has a limiter at 225 mph, which is just 4,.500 rpm in top! Not many will be made, making this a really exotic car.

Acceleration is not as good as you might expect – or maybe it is just modesty at Bristol Cars – at ‘under 3.5 seconds’ whereas the Bugatti Veyron is well under 3 seconds. The difference is largely academic – like the top speeds – but a mid-engined four-wheel drive car will accelerate more quickly than a front-engined rear-drive car. The Bristol Fighter just doesn’t have enough weight on the rear wheels to get under 3 seconds.

Twin turbo V-10

How did they get this huge amount of power? Well, like the other Bristol Fighters, the T has a tuned Chrysler V-10 engine of 8 liters. For the Fighter T they have added a pair of water-cooled turbochargers to almost double power so they could exceed that magic 1,000 bhp figure, getting 1,012 bhp at 5,600 rpm, with 1,036 lb ft (1,400 Nm) of torque at 4,500 rpm. That is quite a high speed for maximum torque, but the engine still produces a massive 800 lb ft (1,080 Nm) of torque from 3,000 rpm, upward.

The Bristol Fighter S has a top speed of over 200 mph, partly owing to good aerodynamics, but The Fighter T is an absolute stormer with a power-to-weight ratio of about 600 bhp per ton and a top speed of well, you name it!

Koenigsegg CCXR runs on ethanol

Now, along comes Koenigsegg with the Koenigsegg CCXR, based on the CCX supercar, but now this version is able to run on ethanol biofuel – E85. Because ethanol has an octane rating of over 100 RON – like racing fuel in the 30s – it gives more power than gasoline, as Saab has demonstrated.

In the Koenigsegg CCXR, power is up from 806 bhp – more than enough for almost everyone – to 1,018 bhp! Peak torque is an incredible 780 lb ft (1,060 Nm) at 6,100 rpm. That’s 25% more power.

With ethanol, power increases of 15-25% can be obtained for any engine so long as it is optimised with high compression ratio and other changes. In other words, don’t just pull up at a gas station, put ethanol in your tank and get 20% more power. It doesn’t work unless the engine is designed to run on it.

But that is not so difficult to do, and with George Bush trying to get more ethanol used in the USA, expect more to follow this route. After all, almost everyone loves power, even if they drive a car that is not very fast.
